Benefits of using the GAIN family of assessments as part of a grant
The acquirement of grant funds can often rely on the use of evidence-based treatment approaches. Evidence-based treatment tools, such as the GAIN, are highly recommended when completing an RFA.

Use of the GAIN makes available:

  • A standardized set of measures that have well established norms
  • Grant-specific instruments and support materials (when applicable)
  • Support in clinical decision making
  • Software to facilitate scoring and interpreting at the clinical level
  • Explicitly designed support program evaluation
  • Training, certification, and coaching
  • The ability to pool data across the project and facilitate program development
  • Monthly and quarterly reports
  • Interoperability with relevant electronic health records and reporting systems
  • A profusion of supported published reports and articles

The GAIN Short Screener (GAIN-SS) or GAIN-Q3 are recommended for use when participants are initially assessed in a controlled environment, as they both capture severity. Both can be followed with the full GAIN Initial (GAIN-I) assessment, which generates a five-axis diagnosis along with placement and treatment planning recommendations, when clients need to be linked to treatment.

The costs of training, quality assurance, certification, monitoring, and data management will vary based on which instrument or instruments are used, the number of staff to be trained as Local Trainers, and the number of line staff to be trained on administration and interpretation. Costs typically range from $40,433 to $68,598 for three years.
