GAIN Program Management and Evaluation Training

The GAIN Program Management and Evaluation Training (PMET) and certification process is designed to help program managers and evaluators work together to develop, implement, evaluate, improve, and sustain evidence-based practices (EBP) in substance abuse treatment programs.  Through knowledge development and skill-building activities using a case-study approach, attendees will learn how to write a comprehensive program management or program evaluation action plan for their agency.  The completed action plan can be used to guide activities and inform and engage stakeholders in the use of EBP. See what past attendees have to say about PMET

GAIN PMET is web-based and self-paced, allowing for maximum flexibility in attendance and learning styles. Program managers who attend PMET should ideally be senior staff responsible for business and program planning, program design, staffing, and day-to-day operations. Evaluators who attend PMET should ideally be senior staff responsible for evaluating a program, leading the evaluation team, designing the evaluation plan, meeting the information needs of the program manager, analyzing data, and disseminating results.

Topics covered during PMET include identification of EBP theory, working with diverse stakeholders, answering typical questions for performance monitoring and program evaluation, evaluation methodology, overcoming challenges in EBP acceptability, implementing and sustaining EBPs, comprehensive reporting, ethical issues, and cultural sensitivity. During the certification process, one-on-one coaching calls with the trainer are provided to answer all questions related to the development of your action plan.

During PMET, attendees will learn practical skills they can quickly put to use to help them implement, monitor, evaluate and sustain EBPs within their substance abuse treatment programs. Participants will:

  • Learn strategies for building and developing comprehensive program management and action plans (managing the implementation and sustainability of EBP and delineating responsibility for key program tasks and timelines for the project) and evaluation plans (process and outcome evaluation questions, performance measurement, quality assurance, and appropriate data sources, among others)
  • Have hands-on practice using GAIN Coordinating Center resources for GAIN program evaluation and program management
  • Learn to identify and use other sources of data (e.g., EBTx, clinical records, urine test, GPRA, interview data)
  • Gain an understanding and practical applications of program evaluation and program management, including cultural competency and ethical practice
  • Learn the similarities and differences between the clinical (individual level) and aggregate (group level) perspectives of GAIN data to facilitate information sharing and open dialogue among a wide range of stakeholders
  • Have hands-on practice using GAIN data (the Site Profiles report) for program planning
  • Have hands-on practice with a case study on each day of training for the purposes of building a comprehensive program management and program evaluation plan

The total cost to attend the web-based, self-paced training and complete the certification process is $2,800 per person.  To obtain additional information (including information about in-person training) please contact gainpmet@chestnut.org.  You can also register for training and review the syllabus
